It's not what

they're learning

but HOW they're

learning

The AG Class approach is most interested in how children are learning. This approach allows us to develop and build on skills that children can successfully utilise for the rest of their lives. We do not extend or accelerate children. Rather we work outside the curriculum to provide children with learning experiences that allow them to be challenged and build a skill set for success.

Our aim

The AG Class aims to foster children who;

  • have a balanced attitude to positive and negative feedback

  • have a growth mindset when they fail

  • work well in teams

  • are self-reflective and able to take responsibility for their own learning

  • embrace challenge

  • have the skills they need to succeed in whatever challenge they wish to pursue

We are like Switzerland

The AG Class is a lot like Switzerland (we are neutral to all local schools). We follow the NESA NSW Syllabuses in all areas of study. But, we operate outside of all primary or high school scope and sequences of learning and do not adhere to one above another. No school or their learning style or sequence is preferred over another.

Topics of study

The topics of study vary wildly from year to year and this is done to explore new learning and take on new challenges. Changing the class units of study regularly helps to keep the class fresh and a unique learning experience each time which can be helpful to address and reinforce challenge - especially when siblings have attended the class in the past.

Do not expect what your child is learning in their school or expected to learn in high school to be taught in the AG Class. We try to avoid repeated learning so anything your child is learning at their home school, or possibly in high school is avoided as best we can. We do try to build their skills in areas like writing and maths to help them confidently use and apply these skills in the future.

Our main focus is on the how

The class uses these topics to help with our main focus, which is HOW the children;

  • take on a challenge,

  • work in a team and

  • give and take feedback.

Developing these skills are essential to children becoming successful in their futures. So while the topics are important, they are used as an effective tool to push children's knowledge and understanding of themselves. We also aim to work with children's mindsets to encourage self-reflection and improve their attitude to their learning, and most importantantly, themselves.

The amount of progress and achievement a child makes is highly individualised. At the end of the day, children get out of the class, what they put into it.

Challenge

We challenge children to take on complex tasks that are detailed in nature and require a great deal of effort and problem solving to complete. We strive to push children out of their comfort zone and into the challenge zone - where true learning occurs.

Teamwork

We encourage the children to work in teams as this helps to foster cooperative learning as well as develop creative thinking and problem solving techniques.

Feedback

"Proving is good. Improving is better" ~ James Nottingham

Feedback is an essential element to learning. Feedback gives us information on how we are performing in relation to our goal, and what our next steps might be to successfully achieving that goal.
