Growth

mindset

"Becoming is better than being"
~ Carol Dweck

A growth mindset is about believing people can develop their abilities to find success. It is as simple and as difficult as that!

Carol Dweck, Ph.D., is one of the world's leading researchers in the fields of motivation and student engagement. She is currently the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Her research has focused on why people succeed and how to foster success. This is an integral part of the AG approach to learning. Growth mindset is complex and can be applied to many situations, so let's try to keep it simple.

Why growth mindset matters?

Children deal with challenge on a daily basis. For the AG class students, the AG Class can be a confrontational experience where their perceptions of themselves can be put to the test. Learning a growth mindset is a way for them to change their thinking and embrace challenges making them more motivated and resilient to failure. Risking effort and facing failure are 2 behaviours that we focus on in the AG Class as they are key behaviours that. We do this through creating learning experiences of challenge, teamwork and feedback. If children can develop a growth mindset, it will encourage them to engage challenge and experience success!

Growth mindset
  • believes intelligence can be developed

  • Embraces challenges

  • Persists in the face of setbacks

  • Sees effort as the path to mastery

  • Learns from and seeks feedback

  • Finds lessons and inspiration in the success of others

Fixed mindset
  • believes intelligence is fixed

  • Avoids challenges

  • Gives up easily

  • Sees effort as fruitless

  • Ignores useful feedback

  • Feels threatened by the success of others

Growth mindset

A growth mindset encourages children to embrace challenge. When being are afraid of challenge, they are rejecting an opportunity to learn. Once they accept challenge is a part of learning, they no longer feel that they are afraid of not being smart - which is a big issue with AG Class children (see risking effort).

Dweck’s research suggests that success is not dependent on natural talent but relies on an individual’s mindset. A child that believes intelligence can be developed (and isn’t an innate, natural ability) is more likely to be motivated, interested in learning and embrace challenges – even when faced with failure they don’t give up trying.

Fixed mindset

A fixed minset is the opposite of a growth mindset. This includes things like being afraid of challenge, or not wanting to apply any effort to new learning. When being are afraid of challenge, then they are rejecting an opportunity to learn. These behaviours are very common for all children, not just AG children. But we often see these behaviours for the first time in AG Children when they are facing the challenges, team work and feedback in AG (see risking effort).

It is the behaviours displayed when people play below the line.

Growth mindset thinking
  • What am I missing?

  • I'll use a different strategy

  • Is this really my best work?

  • I can always improve

  • This may take some time

  • Mistakes help me learn

  • I am going to train my brain to do this

  • I will learn how to do this

  • I tried and I will try again

  • I will learn from my friend

Fixed mindset thinking
  • I'm not good at this

  • I give up

  • I' can't make this any better

  • It's not good enough

  • This is too hard

  • I made a mistake

  • I just can't do this

  • I'll never be smart

  • I tried and it didn't work

  • My friend can do it
