Unbearable is an omnibus containing eight crazy stories; each one about a totally different person to the next. One is about a boy, his father and a fly swatter, the next about a girl, an opal and goat poo. The third story is about a boy and a budgie named Beethoven, the fourth about a hypnotised chicken and the fifth a boy covered in fingernails. The sixth is about exploding toadstools, the seventh story a stuffed fox and the last story is about feet so disgustingly smelly that you would fall asleep at the first sniff. All of these stories have in common: a main character between 9 and 20, references to the protagonists’ emotions and something impossible that weaves the magic into the story.
I loved how Paul gave each character has a distinct personality that makes you feel like you are the main character. I also liked how the stories begin and close perfectly. I didn’t find anything that I disliked. I wouldn’t change anything.
This omnibus is for people who like books with crazy twists, family, magic, or anything else apart from romance or violent books with guns, wars and death. There are 9 more omnibuses in the series such as Unbelievable, Unreal, Uncanny, Unmentionable, Unseen and many more. You can read these books in any order and don’t have to read them all.
I would rate this book for children and teenagers from the age of 8 – 16.
Paul Jennings was born in Heston, England in 1943 and moved to Australia at the age of 6. He performed very well at school and taught at many schools after he graduated university. After many careers at schools, he wrote his first book Unreal in 1989. Since then he has wrote many novels, picture books and series and has made writing books as his fulltime career.
