George’s Marvellous Medicine is another one of my favourite books by Roald Dahl.
It is about a boy who doesn’t have any siblings or friends, because he lives with his parents and horrid grandmother in a remote farm house, miles away from the nearest village. George’s grandma is a nasty crook who is mean in every way possible. Every day, while his parents are out, George has to ‘look’ after his grandmother by giving her medicine to her. One day he gets the idea to do something mean to his grandma, but what?
George comes up with the idea to make a potion out of everything lying around the house and feed it in her medicine bottle to his Grandmother. Into the potion goes shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, washing powder, plaster, flea powder, ‘extra hot’ chilli sauce, pills for horses, paint, and many, many other items.
The ‘medicine’ does very strange things to Grandma, and you will enjoy discovering the parents’ reaction when they see her.
Roald has been very clever at writing this book, and has made many twists and turns appear in this book.
I would rate this book for children aged 7 to 13.
